CHAPTER 8

CARRYING MANTLES

Once we have been entrusted with a mantle from heaven, we must carry it and steward it well. This is where the enemy, the devil, can find places to accuse us. Our endeavor should be to be like Jesus. Remember that He said the devil had come looking but had found no place to accuse Him. We see this in John 14:30.

I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.

There were no grounds for a Court case against Jesus. He had lived His life in such a way that the devil could bring no word against Him. If we have been guilty of exploiting the anointing for personal gain, the devil will use this to deny us mantles. As we cry for the mantling of the Lord, he will raise a case against us to prohibit this. We can see some of the things he will use in Exodus 30:30-33. These were guidelines the Lord gave concerning the carrying of the anointing/ mantles.

And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.

And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: “This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.”

There are six guidelines here to stewarding the anointing of the Lord. If we have been guilty of violating any of these, the devil will bring accusation against us from them. These can be used to deny us a greater mantling and glory on our lives.

For the Lord

The first principle of the anointing is it is for the Lord. Notice that Aaron and his sons were anointed to minister to God as priests. The anointing was for the purpose of serving the Lord acceptably. We cannot serve God correctly or successfully without the anointing. Hebrews 12:28 tells us that we must have the spirit of grace on us. Without His empowerment, we cannot serve Him and be accepted.

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

It is His anointing that empowers us for service. However, the anointing isn’t given to make us famous or rich. The anointing is given for the purpose of fulfilling His purpose. This is one of the main objections that satan brings against us as we contend to carry new mantles. We must allow the purification of our motives. We see this happening in Acts 8:17-23. Simon the sorcerer had seemingly been converted as Philip ministered in Samaria. The apostles had come to administer the Holy Spirit into the new believers’ lives.
